Happy in Hawaii

The year was 2001 and I was about ready to graduate from University. For a graduation present, my parents said I can take an all expense paid trip to wherever I want, as long as it’s in the US. Of course, I picked Hawaii.
My parents weren’t about to pay for my friends to fly across the country and we’re all 21-22 year old punks with very little money so finding someone to go to Hawaii with me was a chore. I ended up meeting a Hawaiian resident online and we started emailing each other almost every day. Her name was Marisa and she was around 19 years old.
Marisa helped me find a cheap hotel, a cheap rental car and after 3 months I was on a plane to Maui. Marisa spent every day with me during my stay there. She taught me how to surf, took me to tourist sites, introduced me to all of her friends and we all had a fantastic time! We went hula dancing, sat by bon fires on the beach, went to some water parks and ate their local “plate lunch” foods. It was one of the best weeks of my life and it’s hard to believe that I had the nerve to go there by myself to meet this stranger.
Almost a year later, Marisa came to visit me here in Phoenix. She actually liked her visit so much that she moved here after she was done college and we’ve been great friends ever since. I highly recommend trip switching, it leads to miraculous friendships.
